Lactation Support in Special Circumstances

  • Medically Complex Infants

Any infant health complication can signficiantly change your lactation journey from what you imagined it would be.

If your infant is suspected or known to have a health complication during pregnancy, prenatal lactation support can be vital. Human milk is not just food, it is medicine for your baby! I can help you anticipate some of the lactation challenges you may face and develop strategies to address them in advance.

If your infant requires a hospital stay after delivery, your feeding experinece will likely be impacted. Once your baby comes home from the hospital, I would love to support you with milk production, transitioning to latching (especially if your infant started with tube feeding or bottles), and adjusting to caring for your newborn at home.

  • Weaning

Eventually your lactation journey will come to an end. For some parents and infants, this is a time to celebrate the season you have spent together and the accomplishments you have made at nourishing your little one with your own milk. For other parents, there is a sadness or even grief associated with stopping - particularly if it is due to unexpected circumstances.

During the weaning process, I can support you to decrease and stop milk production and avoid or manage complications from breast changes. We can discuss options for extra pumped milk and reflect on your lactation journey. I can provide referrals to additional support as needed based on the circumstances.

  • Infant Loss

“How quietly you tiptoed into our world, silently, only a moment you stayed. But what an imprint your footprints have left upon our hearts.” — Dorothy Ferguson

If you are reading this because you have lost your infant, my heart breaks for you! While you may be struggling to wrap your heart and mind around the reality of your infant’s death, your body may still be producing milk like nothing has changed. Please reach out if there is anything I can do to support you in avoiding breast complications as you wean production and in deciding what to do with any expressed milk you may still have.

There is no charge for bereavement lactation support.
